What economics lessons can we learn from Lana Del Rey's song Bartender? We can learn quite a bit about game theory, as Lana is playing a sequential game with the paparazzi and she buys a truck in the middle of the night to avoid them.
We model sequential games with what are called tree diagrams. In this tree diagram, Lana Del Rey moves first and decides whether to buy a truck (or not). Then, the paparazzi can decide whether to pursue (try to find) Lana.
What we ended up finding is that by getting the truck, Lana makes the probability of the paparazzi being successful so low that they won’t pursue her. In game theory, this is considered the subgame perfect Nash equilibrium of the sequential game.
