In the year 1800, basically everybody in the world - and throughout the history of the world - was impoverished. But things started to change around then. The change was dramatic, as we can see from this graph.
What happened? Why was the entire world poor throughout history, and we’re now rich? That’s what Art Carden, Professor of Economics at Samford University discussed when he presented to Susquehanna University on Thursday, October 5th.

Who is Art Carden?
Art Carden is Margaret Gage Bush Distinguished Professor of Business and Medical Properties Trust Fellow at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. He is a co-editor of the Southern Economic Journal and a Fellow with numerous research, education, and outreach institutions. He is also the author (with Deirdre Nansen McCloskey) of Leave Me Alone and I'll Make You Rich: How the Bourgeois Deal Enriched the World (University of Chicago Press, 2020) and Strangers With Candy: Observations From the Ordinary Business of Life (Libertarian Christian Institute, 2023).
